New figures from the Central Statistics Office show a big gain in the number of trips made in Ireland in the second quarter of 2021 compared to 2020.
But the numbers still remain much lower than the same time in 2019.
The CSO said that Irish residents took 990,000 domestic trips in the second quarter of this year, compared to 237,000 in the second quarter of 2020 when strict Covid-19 restrictions were in place.
The figures also marked a big 65.4% drop on the 2.858 million trips made in the same time in 2019.
The trips made in the second quarter of 2021 resulted in almost 3 million bed nights, of which 14.7% were spent in hotel accommodation, the CSO added.
Today's figures show that total expenditure on domestic trips in the three months from April to June amounted to €166m.
Those on holidays accounted for €113m of this, while those visiting friends or relatives spent €32m.
When compared with the same quarter two years ago, expenditure on holidays was down 62.7%, the CSO said.
Spending on trips to visit friends or relatives was down by 58.9%, it added.
The CSO also reported that less than 100,000 outbound overnight trips were undertaken by Irish residents in the second quarter of this year.
These trips accounted for over 850,000 bed nights and spending of almost €42m.
