Aldi Ireland has announced plans to open two new shops in Co Mayo and Co Galway.

Aldi plans to open a new shop in Ballyhaunis in Co Mayo, which will create 30 permanent jobs in the town next year.

Mayo County Council has granted Aldi planning permission to build the new store, which will also create 50 jobs during the construction phase.

The company said the development on Main Street, in the centre of Ballyhaunis, will see a substantial investment into the local area.

The new environmentally friendly store will be powered by 100% renewable electricity and will be constructed in Aldi's "Project Fresh" design.

Aldi has also today announced plans for its new store in Athenry in Co Galway.

Aldi is investing €11m in the construction of the new store, creating 25 new permanent jobs once the store opens, with up to 80 jobs supported during construction.

While full planning permission is already in place for the store, Aldi submitted a planning application today to Galway County Council to slightly amend the scheme to ensure that Athenry shoppers benefit from its "Project Fresh" design.

The new environmentally friendly store will be powered by 100% green electricity, with 10 bike parking spaces and four electric vehicle charging points outside the store.

Aldi said it aims to open the new shop on Clarke Street in late 2022 on the former co-op site, which has been vacant for a number of years.

Meanwhile, Aldi opened its newly revamped and extended Newtown Road store in Wexford town after a €2.5m overhaul.

Over the past month the store has undergone a complete refurbishment, including increasing the shop floor space by 30%.

The store overhaul and extension has created four new permanent jobs in the local area in addition to the current team of 26 staff, and brings the total number of staff working in Aldi's seven Co Wexford stores to over 185.

The discount retailer employs over 4,650 people and operates a network of 148 stores across the country, with stores in each county in the Republic of Ireland.
