Frasers Group is set to open its first two Frasers retail stores in Ireland, creating what it described as a "significant" number of jobs.

The stores will open in units previously occupied by Debenhams, in Mahon Point Shopping Centre in Cork, and Whitewater Shopping Centre in Kildare.

The group said Frasers will stock hundreds of brands, across beauty, fashion, accessories and designer childrenswear.

Sports Direct, which is also owned by Frasers Group and sells sports clothes and equipment, will also operate within both stores.

The company said it will take a phased opening approach, with Sports Direct set to open later this year, and Frasers set to open early next year.

The stores occupy approximately 150,000 sq. ft. combined.

"These new sites mark as a pivotal moment for the group as we continue to demonstrate our commitment to bricks-and-mortar and prove our investment into major retail destinations and the retail market in Ireland," said James France, Head of Global Leasehold Property at Frasers Group.

The deal was brokered by Savills, acting for German fund Deka which owns the two centres, with Cushman and Wakefield acting for the tenant.

Frasers Group is owned by Mike Ashley, one of Britain's best known and most outspoken business leaders.

Last week, Mr Ashley announced plans to step down as chief executive of the retail group he founded nearly 40 years ago, handing the baton to his daughter's partner.
