The Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said the Government's new Artificial Intelligence strategy will challenge the "false narrative" that AI equates to a threat to jobs.

Instead he said it leads to new and better jobs with higher incomes - even if there is some "displacement" in the initial stages.

The first ever National AI strategy, published today, aims to move quickly on the issue because, the Taoiseach said, there are significant advantages to being an early adopter.

Mr Martin said the workforce "needs to be prepared" for the changes which are pending, but Ireland is "very well placed" to take advantage from AI developments.

Minister of State Robert Troy said we need to have clear direction for AI, with clear safeguards, which will build public trust in the new technology.

He said AI had the capacity to double economic growth by 2035.

When it came to jobs, he said it had been estimated that 80-90 thousand jobs could be lost by 2035, but more than 130 thousand could be created.
