The chief executive of the Irish Vintners Federation of Ireland said that last Tuesday was "the blackest day of all" for publicans since 15 March 2020.

Padraig Cribben, who was part of a group who met with government ministers yesterday, said the delegation made it clear that the concept of a Covid pass is not one that is favoured by them.

Mr Cribben said he wants to see a plan put in place to allow a safe re-opening.

This plan should include all public health protocols, that could include antigen testing, he said.

He added that Ireland is now the outlier in Europe.

The Government on Tuesday announced a delay to indoor hospitality beyond the planned 5 July reopening date.

This followed the recommendation from the National Public Health Emergency Team that only vaccinated people, and those who had recovered from Covid-19, should be allowed to enjoy indoor hospitality.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said the Government will find a workable approach and knows the delay will be greeted by "dismay and frustration", while he added that it will provide additional supports in the coming weeks.
