Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, has said the announcement today from Government of the further easing of Covid restrictions is a boost to the confidence of both business and society.

"This evening's announcement is a positive reflection of the successful rollout of the vaccination programme across Ireland in recent months," said Danny McCoy, Ibec CEO.

Mr McCoy said it provides hope for many businesses, particularly those operating within the experience economy, of a gradual return to recovery following an extremely difficult year.

"Until such a time that businesses are back operating at pre-covid levels, continued financial supports will be needed to enable vulnerable firms to operate.

"Moving forward both employers and employees still need crisper timelines for proportionate office reopening beginning late June," he said.

Mr McCoy said a return to safe, digitally certified international travel across Europe is also critical for the long-term, sustainable recovery of the national economy.

"The business community hopes that the ongoing Government review of Covid restrictions will continue to balance the risks from new variants and the necessary full reopening of the Irish economy," he said.

The American Chamber also welcomed the Government's announcement.

CEO Mark Redmond said the plan is a further build in confidence for citizens, businesses and investors here and abroad that Ireland’s reopening remains on track.

"We particularly welcome the clarity given today on international travel.

"We look forward to clarity on transatlantic travel and the removal of the US from the Mandatory Hotel Quarantine (MHQ) regime," he said.

Mr Redmond said he would welcome Government’s adoption of a similar approach to the US as applies under the EU Digital Green Certificate system.

"A particular focus on accelerating the restoration of air connectivity and a phased and safe reopening of travel are critical to Ireland’s economic recovery.

"This not only sends the world a signal that Ireland is open for business, but also enables the mobility of talent working with multinational companies here and Irish companies with US operations," he added.
