Staff at AIB have been informed of plans by the bank to move to a hybrid working model that will allow many work from home for three days a week.
Some employees, who were based in the office full-time previously, may move towards working two days per week in an office, combined with remote working for the remainder of the week, depending on local requirements including the availability of collaborative work spaces.
The bank said further details will be provided as employees return to the office when it is safe to do so.
Frontline staff who have been providing essential services to customers in branches, call centres and office locations through the pandemic, will remain in these locations.
AIB said the hybrid working strategy "will ensure that many of our employees can continue to benefit from an enhanced work-life balance while contributing to sustainable communities".
It means the bank requires less head office space and is due to exit three of six buildings in Dublin, including one on Burlington Road.
The bank is examining the provision of additional remote working capacity in both regional locations and branches as they evolve towards sales and advisory services. It already provides flexible working spaces above some business centres and branches.
The new hybrid working model builds on the Work-Life Guiding Principles which AIB and the Financial Services Union jointly pioneered last year, empowering staff with the right to disconnect.

Chief People Officer Geraldine Casey said, "AIB's people are our most important asset and over the last year they have proven themselves very agile and resilient during a time of great change.
"When the majority of people moved to remote working over a year ago, we could not have foreseen the changes it would bring to our ways of working. In December, we outlined our medium term strategy, confirming that we would be adopting a hybrid working model," Ms Casey said. "Now we're outlining how that looks for our people while continuing to support them through our pioneering Work-Life Guiding Principles.
"This strategy means many of our employees can leave the five days a week commute behind them. Our ways of working will empower our people to continue to deliver professional service to our customers and to take care of themselves as well as each other."
