Annual overseas travel figures down 90% in March - CSO

New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that overseas travel in March 2021 remained considerably lower than the same time last year due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The CSO said there were 61,400 overseas passenger arrivals and 66,500 overseas passenger departures in March 2021.

This was down from the 635,000 arrivals and 602,100 departures the same time last year - drops of 90.3% and 89%.

But today's figures show that the level of overseas travel in March was higher than in February with a 12% increase in arrivals and 25% rise in departures.

Of the 61,400 persons arriving in Ireland in March, 89.7% arrived by air and 10.3% arrived by sea, the CSO said.

It added that of the 66,500 persons departing Ireland, 86.5% departed by air and 13.5% departed by sea.

The CSO said the most important routing countries for persons travelling overseas to Ireland were the UK, Spain and the Netherlands.

For the three months from January to March, a total of 224,200 overseas passengers arrived in Ireland and 238,400 overseas passengers left the country. This compares to about 3 million arrivals and 3 million departures in the same period in 2020.
