Spending so far this month has been up sharply on April 2020, according to the latest debit and credit card statistics from the Central Bank.

Spending this month up to April 18 was €1.1 billion or 45% higher than over the same period last year reflecting the exceptionally low levels of expenditure during the first Covid-19 lockdown.

Today's Central Bank figures show that spending in the week to April 18 rose by €44m, or 3.3%, on the previous week.

The Central Bank noted that spending across all sectors rose, except for grocery which remained flat.

Spending on transport rose by 24% while spending on accommodation rose by 21%, it added.
