Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe has appointed Shay Cody, Sarah Keane and Professor David Miles to the Central Bank Commission, after a decision taken at Cabinet yesterday.

The new appointments will come into effect from December 1 and are for five years.

The Central Bank Commission manages and controls the affairs and activities of the Central Bank.

It ensures the Central Bank's financial regulation and central banking functions are coordinated and integrated, and also ensures that the Central Bank's statutory powers and functions are properly exercised and discharged.

The Minister said today's appointments bring to six the members of the Commission and will ensure an appropriate balance of skills, experience and gender balance on the Commission.

Shay Cody was previously General Secretary of the Fórsa trade union and has extensive experience in corporate management and governance.

Sarah Keane is currently the President of the Olympic Federation of Ireland and the CEO of Swim Ireland. She is a qualified solicitor and has international experience in governance and gender equality issues as well as general extensive experience in corporate management and governance.

Professor David Miles is Professor of Financial Economics at Imperial College Business School London and currently serves as an Economic Advisor to the Bank of England and to the International Monetary Fund.

Paschal Donohoe said the appointments underpin the maintenance of good corporate governance in the Central Bank and also address skills mix, gender balance and diversity within the Central Bank Commission.
