Tesco Ireland said it will be giving a bonus to staff working in its stores and distribution centres this December.

The supermarket chain currently employs over 13,000 people across 151 stores here, making it one of the largest private sector employers in the state.

It plans to provide a 10% bonus on the hourly rate to staff "in acknowledgement of their incredible effort to date", as it approaches the busy Christmas period.

Last week, Tesco Ireland announced that it is to create 450 permanent jobs across the country, and 700 temporary positions for the Christmas trading period.

Tesco has seen demand for online shopping double in the last six months, and online grocery sales have also doubled in that time.

Staff will receive the 10% bonus between November 29 and December 26, if they were in their role on or before September 1 this year. The company has also increased the existing 'colleague shopping discount' from 10% to 20% from December 15 to December 21.

Kari Daniels, CEO of Tesco Ireland, said the company wanted to mark the commitment of staff during the Christmas season. "Our colleagues continue to rise to the challenge of Covid 19 and we recognise that this will be a very different Christmas. In recognition of our teams on the frontline in our stores and distribution centre we will be awarding a 10% bonus for the duration of the Christmas season.

"I thank them sincerely for their continued hard work, dedication and resilience," Ms Daniels said.

It is not known if other supermarket retailers will follow Tesco Ireland's lead in giving bonuses to staff this Christmas.
