Aldi Ireland has postponed all its non-essential product "Specialbuy" promotions in line with Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions.

The retailer also said that all non-essential products usually on sale in the "middle aisles" of its 144 Irish stores have been removed.

Aldi said its decision follows further clarification from the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation regarding the classification of essential and non-essential retail.

It said that special buy offers on essential products, such as Christmas food, drinks and DIY products will continue to go on sale each Thursday and Sunday.

Niall O'Connor, Aldi Group Managing Director, said that Irish families have relied on the supermarket for their groceries and other essential household items over the past eight months.

"Ensuring our customers can continue to do so comfortably and safely is our number one priority," he added.

Aldi also said it has extended the opening hours of its shops in the run up to Christmas and its stores will open at 8am for the very first time.

Extended opening hours for late shoppers have also been announced, with the majority of stores open until 11pm on Christmas week.
