The proposed acquisition by Uniphar of Hickey's Pharmacy Group has been notified to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

Irish pharmaceuticals group Uniphar announced the proposed deal earlier this month.

Hickey's has 36 pharmacies in Dublin, Cork, Kildare, Louth, Meath and Wexford.

Announcing the deal, Uniphar said it would further strengthen its market share in the retail sector.

Uniphar's chief executive Ger Rabbette said the acquisition of Hickey's into the company's Supply Chain and Retail division would further improve its leadership position in the Irish market.

Uniphar also owns a number of community pharmacies in the State.
