Prepaypower follows Electric Ireland in announcing a hike in the price of electricity from next month

Pre-paid electricty provider, Prepaypower, is the latest energy company to announce a hike in prices.

An increase of 2.9% will be implemented from October 4th.

The move will see a reversal of the 2.5% reduction in electricity prices introduced by the provider in April.

It calculated that the increase for the average customer would be of the order of 9 cent per day.

Earlier in the week, Electric Ireland announced a 3.4% increase in prices from October 1st, which amounts to an additional €2.88 a month for the average residential electricity bill.

Prepaypower said an increase in network related costs was to blame for the price hike.

The company said it was freezing gas prices for the winter having reduced them by 11.5% earlier this year.

That mirrors the situation at Electric Ireland where the company also announced a freeze in gas prices for the winter months.

"The increase in electricity prices arises from network cost pressures which are impacting all the suppliers of electricity in the market and which are outside of our control," Prepaypower said in a statement.

"We remind our customers that through our app, there are a number of opportunities to manage energy consumption which can lower energy consumption and costs."
