New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that 89.4% of surveyed businesses were trading in some capacity at the end of May.
But the CSO's latest Business Impact of Covid-19 Survey also reveals that 9.6% have temporarily ceased trading while 1% have ceased trading permanently.
Today's survey shows that 26.3% of responding enterprises restarted trading in May.
The CSO noted that in the Construction sector, 58.1% of enterprises restarted trading last month.
The online survey was sent to a sample of 3,000 businesses and the information was collected between June 2 and June 17 and the response rate was 27.9%.
Over 74% of businesses who responded to the survey indicated that they had rearranged the workplace to facilitate social distancing measures in response to Covid-19 while 37.8% had introduced occupancy limits in the workplace.
Meanwhile, 41.3% of enterprises required mandatory PPE in the workplace.
Today's figures showed that more than seven in ten responding enterprises saw a reduction in turnover of 10% or more during the four-week period from May 4 to May 31, compared to normal expectations.
However, 30.9% of companies indicated that their turnover had increased following the easing of restrictions on Monday May 28.
Meanwhile 58.4% of responding enterprises have availed of Government supports during the Covid-19 crisis. This was higher for SMEs (60.5%) compared to large enterprises (47.8%).
Of those who availed of Government supports, 55.4% had availed of the Temporary Covid-19 Wage Subsidy Scheme, the CSO said.
