Penneys is to reopen 16 of its stores here tomorrow morning, but the number of customers allowed inside at any one time will be limited to ensure adequate social distancing.

Fitting rooms will be temporarily closed off, as will customer toilets and cafe and beauty concessions in store.

Store layouts have been adapted to give more space between people and queuing systems at tills reconfigured.

"While it might take a little longer to get into store, once inside, customers will find all their favourite Penneys products and plenty of choice as usual. We have worked hard to make sure that clear signage and extra help will be there to guide them through the changes we have made to allow for social distancing," said Paul Marchant, CEO of Penneys parent Primark.

"We are also asking customers to respect the measures we have put in place to help ensure shopping at Penneys is an enjoyable, safe experience for everyone."

Extra security staff will be on duty to assist customers to stick to social distancing rules while they queue outside and additional employees will also manage entrance and till queues.

Hand sanitiser stations will be available at entrances and on the shop floor and customers will be asked to sanitise their hands on the way in.

Every second till will be closed to leave enough space between checkout workers.

Perspex screens have also been installed at the tills, while face masks and gloves are being made available to employees.

Customers will not be able to try testers in the health and beauty department as they have been removed.

Stores will be cleaned more frequently and rigorously than before, particularly items or places that are touched more regularly.

Baskets will also be cleaned before each use.

Penneys 20 others stores located in shopping centres will not reopen until Monday when Government restrictions are lifted.

The company says there will be no sales or special offers when it reopens its stores.
