The majority of consumers still expect businesses to prioritise sustainability, according to a new survey conduced on behalf of paper and packaging manufacturer Smurfit Kappa.
The survey also found that most business use customer satisfaction as a way of measuring their return on sustainability investments, though most struggle to measure their strategies in that area.
Ken Bowles, chief financial officer of Smurfit Kappa, said that as we enter uncertain economic times, businesses are placing every effort on recovery and are focused on how to rebuild as public health restrictions begin to be eased.
Mr Bowles said that business leaders also need to keep an eye on the future, in which sustainability will be a core pillar of business strategies, adding that the climate crisis will remain post Covid-19.
He said today's survey highlights now more than ever the need to create an environment where business can embrace sustainable practices without the pressure of additional costs.
"This will require a multi-stakeholder dialogue between industry, government, regulators and consumer representatives to ensure a collective approach is agreed to make the financial case for sustainability more accessible for business," he added.
