Stobart Air, which operates Aer Lingus Regional services, said it has decided to operate a significantly reduced schedule this week which will result in temporary layoffs of staff.
The airline said it would temporarily suspend all international flight operations with effect from Saturday March 28 until further notice.
However, Stobart said it will continue to operate its public service obligation (PSO) routes from Dublin to Kerry and Dublin to Donegal, which it said will maintain "vital" domestic connectivity for passengers.
It said that all of its scheduled international services will continue to operate up to Tuesday March 24 (up to 11.59pm) to ensure passengers have an opportunity to complete trips or make necessary travel arrangements.
International services between March 25 and March 28 will be reduced to limited services between Dublin and Glasgow and Dublin and Edinburgh.
Given its decision to suspend international services, the airline said that temporary lay-offs will be required.
"Consultation with staff and employee representative groups to make the difficult but necessary arrangements are underway," it said.
Stobart said that the Covid-19 pandemic has seen the demand for airline services decrease at unprecedented levels. "Its rapid impact across the global aviation industry has been staggering," it added.
Stobart said that all affected passengers will be notified by email and advised of their options.
The airline said the measures are being implemented to protect the business against the current commercial reality and position it for the future.
Stobart said that all affected passengers will be notified by email and advised of their options.
"Stobart Air's operations, particularly our Aer Lingus Regional service, has proven to be popular with millions of passengers over the years," the airline said.
"Central to this has been our team of pilots, cabin crew, ground and executive staff. We remain committed to the resumption of services once the Covid-19 pandemic has ended," it added.
