The maker of Dr Pepper is to open a manufacturing facility in Co Kildare later this year.

The beverage concentrate plant will be based on the site that formerly housed a Lidl distribution centre.

Keurig Dr Pepper said it will be hiring 50 people for the facility, which will be operational by the end of this year.

It said the new factory would give it access "to a robust market", while reducing risk by diversifying its supply base.

Keurig Dr Pepper owns a number of drinks brands, including Canada Dry and Sunkist. It also controls the 7up and Schweppes brands in the US.

Aside from soft drinks it also owns a range of coffee brands.

IDA Ireland CEO Martin Shanahan said the decision "endorses Ireland's reputation as a global location for manufacturing and supply chain excellence".
