SSE Renewables has agreed a deal to buy a 29-turbine, shovel-ready wind farm development in Co Offaly with an installed capacity in excess of 100MW.

SSE Renewables is buying the Yellow River Wind Farm project outside Rhode in Co Offaly from Green Wind Energy (Wexford).

On-site pre-construction works have already started and the project was granted full planning consent in 2014.

SSE Renewables said it expects to start full construction of the wind farm in late 2020 with an expected project completion date by 2022.

The project is expected to support up to 80 full-time construction jobs at peak delivery and when it is up and running, the wind farm will be capable of generating enough green energy to power over 50,000 homes a year.

SSE also said it will offset more than two million tonnes of carbon dioxide over its expected 25-year lifetime, which will help contribute to the country's 70% renewable energy target by 2030.

As well as its onshore sites, SSE Renewables also develops offshore wind energy project in Irish waters. It is developing phase two of the Arklow Bank Wind Park off Co Wicklow which can generate up to 800MW.

The company is also in the early stages of work on two new projects, the 800MW Braymore Point off the north-east of the country and the 800MW Celtic Sea array off the south-east coast.

Paul Cooley, director of Capital Projects at SSE Renewables, said the acquisition of the Co Offaly project further reinforces its leading position in the new renewable energy market at a time when there is a renewed drive by Government to support the delivery of new renewable energy to meet the 2030 climate action targets.

"Yellow River Wind Farm will contribute towards our ambition of developing and building enough renewable energy capacity to treble annual output of renewable electricity to 30TWh by 2030," he added.
