Jones Engineering Group is investing €7 million in a new manufacturing facility in Carlow.

The manufacturing and research plant will make prefabricated and modular units for construction projects across Ireland and Europe.

50 jobs have already been created at the company in the areas of engineering, design, procurement, logistics, fabrication and transportation.

It says it intends to grow the employment number to 150 in the next 18 months.

"The modular building industry is replacing traditional construction particularly in large scale developments. In a sector that is often accused of being inefficient and lacking in innovation, this is an innovative solution to achieving more sustainable construction," Jim Curley, Chief Executive, Jones Engineering Group said.

"We design and manufacture on site in Carlow and then ship completed modular or prefabricated units to the construction site.  We are currently exporting to mainland Europe and we expect the market to continue to grow.

Having been in operation for almost 130 years, Jones Engineering is one of Ireland's oldest companies.

It now employs more than 2,500 people in 13 countries in Ireland, mainland Europe and the Middle East.
