Netflix has commissioned a spin-off of the popular TV show Vikings, which will be filmed at Ashford Studios in Wicklow.

Vikings last year finished filming after six seasons in Ashford - the last of which will start airing next month.

But fans will now have Vikings: Valhalla to look forward to. The series is set 100 years after the events of Vikings.

Netflix is also currently producing My Father's Dragon at the Cartoon Saloon in Kilkenny, Fate: The Winx Saga at Ardmore Studios in Bray.

The Knight Before Christmas, which is being released this Friday, was also partly filmed at Charleville Castle in Tullamore, Co Offaly.

Michael Hirst, executive producer of Vikings: Valhalla, said that he was very happy to be returning to Ireland and Ashford Studios in "glorious" County Wicklow.

"Our Irish crew, in my opinion, is the best and most professional crew in the world. And it has been a particular joy to me, shared with my producer Morgan O'Sullivan, that we have been able to give continuous employment to many hundreds of Irish men and women," Mr Hirst said.

"Ireland is well known for its support of writers and drama and Vikings has benefitted, and will now continue to benefit, from both that cultural and financial support. Making a great show isn't a mechanical activity; it's a human one," he added.
