Marston's to sell off more pubs after profit warning

Marston's has raised its disposal forecast to £70m from £40m for 2019
Marston's has raised its disposal forecast to £70m from £40m for 2019

Marston's said today it would sell off more pubs this year, as the British pub operator expected lower annual pretax profit due to a fall in food sales at some of its pubs, as well as higher labour costs.

The company, which has an estate of around 1,500 managed, franchised and leased pubs, said it would sell more pubs than anticipated.

It raised its disposal forecast to £70m from £40m for 2019.

Pubs and restaurants across the UK such as Marston's, Greene King, JD Wetherspoon, and Mitchells & Butlers have been dealing with higher minimum wages and costs.

Marston's said it was prepared for a potential disorderly Brexit and that it has implemented its contingency plans to ensure a smooth Christmas trading period.

The company, which brews ales such as Lancaster Bomber, Brakspear and Mansfield, expects underlying pretax profit in 2019 of around £101m.

It had reported pretax profit of £104m last year.
