36.6 million tonnes of goods was transported by road in Ireland in the first quarter of the year, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.
This represents an increase of 2.8% when compared with the same period in 2018.
Activity measured as weight by distance increased by 4.6% to 2,890 million tonne-kilometres in the first quarter of 2019.
There were an estimated 123,475 goods vehicles on the roads in Ireland in the first quarter, which was 8.7% higher than in the same period the year before.
The total distance covered by road freight transport in the first quarter was 418 million kilometres.
The commodity group 'Quarry products, metal ores and peat' represented one quarter of all tonnes carried.
