The Minister for Communications Richard Bruton has approved the takeover of Independent News and Media by Belgian-Dutch group Mediahuis.

The acquisition received the backing of INM shareholders at an extraordinary general meeting last month.

It now needs High Court approval, with a hearing set for tomorrow morning on the matter.

Announced in late April, the €145.6m takeover will see INM become part of a rapidly growing media group.

Founded in 2013, Mediahuis today employs more than 3,200 people and last year reported a turnover of €819m.
