Ian McLaughlin has been appointed CEO of Bank of Ireland's UK operations.

Mr McLaughlin has been Royal Bank of Scotland's managing director of home buying and ownership and specialist banking, while he previously held roles at Lloyds Bank and Zurich Financial Services.

He will replace Des Crowley as CEO of Bank of Ireland (UK) plc and Bank of Ireland's UK retail business, who announced his decision to retire last year.

However Bank of Ireland said that, in order to ensure a smooth transition, Mr Crowley would continue in the role until Mr McLaughlin takes over the position.

"Ian brings significant experience in UK banking having served in a number of senior financial services roles," said Bank of Ireland CEO Francesca McDonagh.

"Ian has a deep knowledge of the competitive UK banking market with a particular understanding of the UK mortgage market. Ian joins at an exciting time for the organisation, as we continue to transform our culture, our systems, and our business model."

Ms McDonagh also paid tribute to Mr Crowley, who has worked at the bank for more than 30 years.

"I am excited to join Bank of Ireland as Chief Executive of the UK business... It is an organisation with a unique heritage and history," Mr McLaughlin said. "I am honoured to have the opportunity of building on the legacy Des and the team have created as we go on to write the next chapter of the UK business."

Bank of Ireland provides financial services through partnerships with a number of companies in the UK, including the AA and Post Office.
