Retail sales volumes in January posted their weakest annual growth since March on the back of weak car sales, new figures from the Central Statistics Office showed today.

Retail sales posted annual growth of 1.2% in January, down from 3.2% in December, today's data showed. 

Today's figures showed that the volume of car sales slowed by 2.5% on a yearly basis.

Excluding volatile car sales, core retail sales volumes posted an annual increase of 4%, up from growth of 3.8%in December.

Today's figures also show there was a decrease of 0.6% in the value of retail sales in January compared to December 2018, while there was an annual increase of 0.2%.
