A new report reveals that men consistently receive more back in tax relief than women, and people aged under 45 are the most effectual at claiming back what they are owed.

The latest annual Taxback.com Taxpayer index also shows that refunds are up across the board, which is good news for taxpayers.

The index looks at Taxback.com's refund applications and receipts over the last 12 months and compares them with the same time the previous year.

It noted big jumps in certain categories, including the average refunds for 35-44 year-olds increasing from €1,142 to €1,355.

Taxback.com said this could be a sign that people are earning more as the economy improves, and that the level of income is rising across the board.

But it also noted that as in previous years, the difference between the average refund received by men and women is very evident.

The tax experts believe that the gender pay gap may well have something to do with the male to female discrepancy in refunds, while the varying and often fragmented career paths of women may also be an underlying cause.

Taxback.com also outlined the top five tax reliefs people claimed for over the 2017- 2018 period. These were medical expenses, rent tax credit, single parent tax credit, medical insurance and flat rate expenses.

Unsurprisingly Dublin accounted for the lion's share of applications, followed by Cork. Meath was next in line, followed by Galway, Kildare and Kilkenny.

"However, our research has shown us that right across the country, young professionals are the most active in seeking out tax refunds, with approximately 38% of 25-34 year olds across the 26 counties doing so," commented Eileen Devereux, Commercial Director at Taxback.com.

"The message is clear - there is no time to waste in claiming back any money owed by the taxman, whether it's for medical expenses, rent credit, home carer's tax relief, flat rate expenses, or the myriad of other tax reliefs out there," Ms Devereux added.
