The American Chamber of Commerce in Ireland has called for speedier implementation of infrastructure projects here.

It says competition for jobs internationally is intense and there must be a focus on pace of implementation in order to continue to attract projects and skilled individuals to the country.

"Our concern is, while we love the ambition of programmes like Ireland 2040 or Global Ireland, the key issue is we've never seen so much competition for jobs globally. Our focus should be on pace of implementation of infrastructure - whether it's the Galway Ring Road or the M7 works at Naas, through to broadband access," Mark Redmond, CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ireland (AmCham) said.

"Pace and speed are our friends, complacency is the enemy."

Nonetheless, multinationals have reported encouraging trends in job creation here.


Four in five have grown employee numbers here in the past year and 70% believe Ireland is a better place to create jobs than it was in 2015, according to research from AmCham.

However, there are signs of skills shortages with half of companies reporting that they have at least 16 positions open.

The Chamber also looked at Inclusion and Diversity policies among American multinationals here.

Around 7 in 10 have policies in place around inclusion in hiring.

Half of multinational leaders, however, expressed doubts about their own abilities to be champions of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

"Only 53% said they were personally comfortable with driving inclusion and calling out where they see exclusion. That's partly to do with awareness of the issues, having the language to address those issues and to call out exclusion when they see it," Mark Redmond explained.

"The differently-abled is a good example in relation to mental, emotional or cognitive impairment. We don't think there isn't sufficient awareness. Maybe that's because it's not visible," he concluded.
