Portuguese airline TAP is to launch a new double daily service between Dublin and Lisbon from next summer.

The new route will also offer onward connectivity to South America and other locations via TAP’s global network.

"We’re delighted to welcome TAP back to Dublin Airport after an absence of more than a decade," said Dublin Airport Managing Director Vincent Harrison. "We look forward to working closely with TAP to promote this new service."

Dublin-Lisbon is already a strong market for Dublin Airport with about 276,000 passengers taking flights between two capital cities in the 12 months to the end of June.

Meanwhile, ten million passengers passed through the five main airports in the second quarter of the year, according to figures published by the Central Statistics Office. That was an increase of 7.2% over the same period last year.

Passenger numbers increased in all five main airports. Dublin airport accounted for 85.3% of all air passengers in the second quarter of 2018.

In the first half of 2018, almost 17 million passengers travelled through the main Irish airports, an increase of 5.8% compared with the same period in 2017.

London- Heathrow, London-Gatwick and Amsterdam-Schiphol were the most popular routes for passengers travelling through Dublin airport in the second quarter of 2018.

In Cork airport, the top three routes were London-Heathrow, London-Stansted and Malaga.

The top route for Shannon was London-Heathrow, the top route for Knock was London-Stansted and the top route for Kerry was London-Luton. 

Outside of Europe, the US was the most popular country of origin/destination in the second quarter of 2018.
