The volume of output in the building and construction industry increased by 7.4% in the first quarter of 2018 when compared to the same time last year, boosted by residential and non-residential building.

New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that residential building volumes jumped by 5.6% in the first three months of the year. There was also a 5.5% increase in the volume of work in non-residential building, and an increase of 1.1% in civil engineering.

On an annual basis, the volume of output in building and construction increased by 20.6% in the first quarter of 2018 when compared with the fourth quarter of 2017.

This reflected rises of 30% and 10.1% respectively in the volume of residential building work and civil engineering work, while output in non-residential building work increased by 8.1% in non-residential building work in the year to end of March.

There was an increase of 18.1% in the value of production in the same period.
