Banks will refund any fees and charges to customers who have been unable to lodge funds to their accounts to meet scheduled payments like direct debits, cheques and standing orders, over recent days as a result of banks closing due to the weather.

Banks closed yesterday and today leaving some customers unable to lodge money to meet these payments which would normally have resulted in bank fees or charges.

In a statement from the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland, said, "In the circumstances banks have agreed to refund any such referral fees and any such unpaid fees/charges which may have applied to the following business days – Wednesday, February 28, Thursday, March 1 and Friday, March 2."

The BPFI said customer communications and the refund process will be managed by each individual bank.
