If you work in the information and communications sector, you are likely to enjoy the highest average weekly earnings in the country, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

People in this sector earned on average €1,100.79 every week in the last quarter of 2017.

People working in the financial, insurance or real estate sector also fared well, earning on average €1,023.78 every week during the same period.

This compares to the average weekly earnings of €734.60 across all sectors.

The CSO figures show that the lowest average weekly earnings were €350.04 in the accommodation and food services sector, while people working in the arts, entertainment, recreation and other service activities sector earned €472.83 on average every week. 

The largest percentage increase was 5% in the information and communication sector.

The second largest increase was 4.4% jointly in the professional, scientific and technical and the accommodation and food services sectors.

The Construction sector showed the largest annual decrease of 0.9%, falling from €751.49 to €744.53. 

Average weekly earnings in the public sector (including semi-state) showed an increase of 2.9% from €920.13 to €946.55 in the year to Q4 2017. 

Average earnings growth in the public sector can be partly attributed to wage restoration from April 2017. 

There was also an increase in average weekly earnings in the private sector of 2.3%, from €660.01 to €674.94 over the same period.
