There was a 5% fall last year in the number of trips to Ireland by British residents.

Sterling weakness against the euro appears to have discouraged some travellers from Britain but figures from the Central Statistics Office show overall visitor numbers were up year-on-year.

The total number of visits to Ireland from overseas was 9.9 million, an increase of 3.6% on 2016.

Trips by residents of European countries other than the UK increased by 5.5% to just under 3.5 million and trips by residents of North America were up by 16.2% to 2.1 million.

The figures also show a significant increase in the number of foreign trips made by Irish residents too, up 7.2% to 7.9 million.
