Dublin-based Hostelworld saw a 6% increase in overall bookings last year, according to a trading statement from the company today.

Hostelworld offers an online booking platform to hostels and budget accommodation providers and currently serves 35,000 properties in over 170 countries.

In today's statement, the company said that its results for the full year to December are in line with its expectations.

It noted that bookings growth in the second half of 2017 was - as anticipated - more modest, rising by 1% on the second half of 2016.

Bookings on its flagship Hostelworld brand increased by 13%, with growth of 6% in the second half of the year.

Feargal Mooney, the chief executive of Hostelworld, said the company was pleased with its performance in 2017.

"During the second half of the year we delivered an efficient booking mix with marketing costs for the full year marginally lower than our previously guided range. We continue to execute well on our strategy and this positions the group well to make further progress in 2018," Mr Mooney added.

In a note, Davy said it expects Hostelworld's net revenue to rise 7% to €86m when it announces its full year results in April.
