Ireland saw the second highest annual rise in house prices in the European Union in the third quarter of last year.

New figures from Eurostat show that Irish house prices grew by 12% in the three months from July to September, second only to the Czech Republic which saw growth of 12.3%. 

The third highest rate of growth was seen in Portugal, with house prices there up 10.4%.

Eurostat said that on average house prices rose by 4.1% in the euro area and by 4.6% in the European Union in the three month period. 

Italy was the only country to record a fall with house prices there down by 0.9%.

Ireland also recorded the highest quarterly house price rise in the third quarter of 2017 with prices up 5.7% on the previous quarter. 

The average for both the euro area and EU was 1.7%, Eurostat said.
