New figures from the Central Statistics Office show the number of trips to Ireland by non-residents increased from 3.062 million in the third quarter of 2016 to 3.096 million trips in the third quarter of this year.
This marked an increase of 1.1%.
Today's CSO figures show that while the number of visits from UK residents fell in the three months from July to September, the number of visits from North American residents increased.
Visits to Ireland from UK residents fell to 1.065 million in the three months to September from 1.148 million the same time last year.
Meanwhile, visits here from US and Canadian residents rose to 733,00 from 638,000.
Today's CSO figures also reveal that the number of nights spent in Ireland by overseas travellers decreased by 0.5% in the three months under review, falling to 23.6 million from 23.7 million.
The average duration of overseas trips to Ireland also fell from 7.7 nights in the third quarter of 2016 to 7.6 nights in the third quarter of this year.
The CSO said that total tourism and travel earnings from overseas travellers to Ireland increased by 2.1% from €2.241 billion to to €2.287 billion.
When fares are excluded, total expenditure increased from €1.693 billion to €1.736 billion, an increase of 2.5%
Meanwhile, the third quarter also saw the the number of trips made by Irish residents overseas rising by 10.7%, from 2.253 million trips to 2.495 million.
The average duration of overseas trips made by Irish residents decreased from 9.4 nights in the third quarter of last year to nine nights in the third quarter of 2017.
The CSO said that total tourism and travel expenditure by Irish residents overseas increased by 5.9%, up from €1.771 billion to €1.875 billion.
When all fares are included, total expenditure on overseas trips increased by 5.9%, from €2.231 billion to €2.362 billion.
