Businessman Denis O'Brien's telecoms group Digicel has appointed a new group chief executive - Alexander Matuschka Greiffenclau.

He replaces Colm Delves, who had signalled to the board his intention to step down from the role some time ago.

Mr Delves had been CEO at the group for the last 13 years during which time the company grew from $478m revenues in eight markets to $2.5 billion revenues across 32 markets.

The company also saw a ten-fold increase in profitability and subscribers.

Alexander joins Digicel from VEON, a global provider of telecommunications services, where he has served as Group Chief Performance Officer since the middle of 2015.

He had previously worked at Nokia Networks.

Digicel chairman Denis O'Brien said the incoming CEO's telecommunications credentials and experience of working in dynamic and transforming sectors, meant he was "a natural fit" for the business.

"Our enthusiastic welcome of Alex is tempered only by the fact that Colm will be stepping down from a role in which he excelled and where he led by example for more than a dozen years," he added.

He said that Mr Delves has led the diversification of Digicel from being purely a mobile company to a total communications and entertainment provider with major investments in fibre-to-the-home, business solutions and digital media.

In a statement, Digicel said that Mr Delves will remain as a non-executive director of the company and will also provide advisory services to it.
