New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the sale of new cars slowed again last month, while sales of used - or imported - cars increased.

The CSO said the number of new cars licensed in November slowed down by 13.7% to 1,594 compared to the same time last year.

But the number of used (imported) cars rose by 10.4% to 8,415 from 7,621 the same time last year.

Today's CSO figures show that in the first eleven months of 2017, a total of 126,444 new private cars were licensed, a decrease of 10.5% compared with the same time last year.

They also reveal that the number of used cars licensed increased by 35.1% so far this year compared with the same time in 2016.

There was also a 15.1% decrease in the number of new goods vehicles licensed in November of this year, bringing the total to 1,172.

According to the CSO, Volkswagen was the most popular make of new private cars licensed followed by Renault, Skoda, Ford and Opel.

Together these five makes represent 45.0% of all new private cars licensed in November.

Meanwhile, 64.9% of new private cars licensed so far this year were diesel.

Earlier this week, figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry showed that new car registrations for the month of November were down 9% to 687 as the industry prepared for sales of 181 cars in January.

SIMI said that new cars registrations so far this year slowed down by 10% to 131,200 compared to the same time in 2016.

Licensing differs from registration in that a vehicle is licensed when a valid motor tax disc is issued for the first time. Registration occurs when a vehicle gets its licence plate (or registration number) for the first time.
