Irish residents took over 2.3m domestic trips between April and June, an increase of 14.6% when compared with the same period twelve months earlier, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.

This contrasts with a 6.5% annual decrease in domestic trips in Quarter 2 2016.

The number of trips taken is influenced by when Easter falls, with the holiday falling in Quarter 2 this year, as opposed to Quarter 1 last year.

Each trip had an average duration of 2.6 nights, resulting in 6.1m bed nights.

Holidays accounted for just over half (52.8%) of all domestic trips during the quarter, while 28.2% were to visit friends or relatives.

Visitors who stayed in hotel accommodation accounted for 848,000 (36.3%) domestic trips between April and June, while those who stayed with family and friends accounted for 678,000 (29.0%) trips.
 
Total spend on these trips came in at €450.3m, with almost €263m of this accounted for by those on holidays, while those visiting friends or relatives spent over €71m during the period.

The CSO figures also show that nearly 2.2m outbound trips were undertaken by Irish residents in the second quarter, an increase of 8% over the same period last year.

A total of 14.5m bed nights were availed of by Irish residents travelling abroad during the period.

The average length of stay on outbound trips was 6.7 nights, with the UK and Spain the two most popular destinations in terms of trip numbers at 617,000 and 597,000 respectively.

Almost two thirds (62.8%) of all outbound trips were classified as holidays, while almost a fifth (17.4%) were for the purpose of visiting friends or relatives. 

Visitors who stayed in hotels accounted for 5.4m nights, those staying in self-catering/rented house accommodation accounted for 3.4m nights and those staying with family and friends accounted for 2.9m nights.

Irish residents spent €1.72 billion on outbound trips in Q2, of which €1.07 billion was spent on holidays, over €242m on business trips and over €198m on visiting friends and relatives.
