Finance trims 2018 economic growth forecast

The Government has trimmed its growth forecast for 2018 but said the economy would be marginally stronger than expected in the following three years. 

The country's gross domestic product (GDP) will grow by 3.5% in 2018, down from an earlier forecast of 3.7%, the Department of Finance said in a presentation posted on its web site. 

It raised its GDP growth forecast by 0.1% for each of the following three years to 3.2% in 2019, 2.8% in 2020 and 2.6% in 2021. 

The Department of Finance also maintained its forecast for 2017 GDP growth at 4.3%.

But it revised downwards its forecasts for the unemployment rate to 6.3% in 2017 from 6.4% and to and 5.7% in 2018 from 5.8%.
