New figures from the Central Statistics Office show further evidence of the recovering construction industry as planning permissions in the second quarter jumped by 41.8%.

The CSO said that planning permissions were granted for 4,453 homes in the three months from April to June, up from 3,141 the same time last year.

Breaking down the figures, they show that planning permissions were granted for 3,630 houses in the three month period - an increase of 55.1% on the figure of 2,340 in the second quarter of last year.

Planning permissions were secured for 823 apartment units, an increase of 2.7% on the same time last year.

The CSO noted that once-off houses accounted for 28% of all new units in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, planning permissions for new agriculture buildings fell to 349 in the quarter from 510 in the second quarter of last year.
