The number of people signing on the Live Register last month fell to the lowest level since September 2008, new figures from the Central Statistics Office show.

The CSO said that the Live Register saw a monthly decrease of 7,300 (2.9%) in August, bringing the seasonally adjusted total to 248,500.

In unadjusted terms, the CSO said there were 264,256 persons signing on the Live Register in August, down 51,762 or 16.4% on the same time last year.

Earlier this week, CSO figures showed that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for August fell to 6.3% from 6.4% in July.

The decrease in unemployment in August reversed the rare rise seen in July.

Employment has grown strongly since the jobless rate peaked at 15.1% in 2012 when the country was in the middle of an international bailout.

Jobs growth expanded at its fastest rate since the financial crisis in the first quarter of the year.

The Finance Department has forecast that the unemployment rate will dip below 6% by the end of this year.

This means the economy could reach full employment next year with the rate forecast to remain at 5.5% from 2018 onwards.

The country's jobless rate compares with a current euro zone average of 9.1%.

The Live Register includes part-time workers, as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to jobseeker's benefit or jobseeker's allowance.
