The Bank of Canada increased its key lending rate by 0.25 percentage points to 1% today as the economy roars back to life.

"Recent economic data have been stronger than expected, supporting the Bank's view that growth in Canada is becoming more broadly-based and self-sustaining," it said in a statement.

This was only the second rate hike in seven years, from a near-historic low.
