Ryanair says it is the first EU airline to carry more than one billion passengers after seeing 11% growth in traffic to 12.6m passengers in July.

The airline’s load factor rose by 1% to 97%, when compared with the same month last year.

Ryanair’s Chief Marketing Officer Kenny Jacobs said the growth comes on the back of lower fares and the "continuing success of our ‘Always Getting Better’ customer experience programme.

"In July we celebrated carrying our one billionth customer since our first flight in 1985 and became the first EU airline to carry over one billion passengers," he added.
