Unemployment rate rises marginally In July; CSO

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate went up slightly in July.

The rate went from 6.3% in June to 6.4% in July.

However, it compares to an unemployment rate of 8.1% in July of last year.

The male unemployment rate increased by 0.1% in the month to 7.2% while the corresponding rate for females remained unchanged at 5.4%.

The seasonally adjusted youth unemployment rate - covering persons aged between 15 and 24 - was 12.3% in July, up from 12% in June.

It's understood the marginal increase in the unemployment rate in the month relates to an increase in the labour force, or the number of people eligible to work.

The last time there was an increase in the monthly unemployment rate was in April of last year when the rate went from 8.3% in March 2016 to 8.4% in April.
