The Live Register fell to its lowest level since October 2008 last month as the numbers signing on continued to fall.

New figures from the Central Statistics Office showed that on a seasonally adjusted basis, the Live Register total recorded a monthly decrease of 4,800, or 1.8%, in June.

This reduced the seasonally adjusted total to 259,200.

The CSO said that in unadjusted terms there were 268,726 persons signing on the Live Register in June, down almost 15% on the same time last year.

The Live Register includes part-time workers, as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to jobseeker's benefit or jobseeker's allowance.

Figures earlier this week from the CSO showed the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 6.3% in June, down from 8.3% the same time last year and the lowest level since June 2008.

Ireland's jobless rate compares with a current euro zone average of 9.3%.

Today's CSO figures show the number of men signing on fell by 2,500 (1.7%) in June, while the number of women decreased by 2,200 (2%).

They also reveal that the number of long term claimants on the Live Register stood at 115,205.

The number of long term male claimants decreased by 21.8% in the year to June 2017, while the number of women claimants fell by 16.6%.

This gives an overall annual decrease of 28,566, or 19.9%, in the number of long term claimants.

Meanwhile, the percentage of people aged under 25 on the Live Register stood at 11.8% in June, down from 12.5% the same time last year.
