Teeling Whiskey will be imported into the US through Bacardi from September after the two companies agreed a new deal.

The US is the largest market for Irish whiskey in the world with sales of over 3.5 million nine litre cases in 2016.

As part of the deal, Bacardi has taken a minority stake in the Teeling Whiskey Company.

In a statement, Teeling said it continue to lead and run the business and it will "continue to operate independently and autonomously".

Dublin-based Teeling Whiskey Company was founded in 2012 by Jack Teeling, who was later joined by his brother Stephen in 2013.

Its whiskey is now exported to over 50 international markets and has been sold in the US since 2014.

"Joining forces with a partner of this calibre in the largest market for Irish whiskey is an important strategic development for us and is testament to what Teeling Whiskey has achieved over the past five years," commented Jack Teeling, the company's managing director.

"We look forward to working with our new partners to drive the evolution and segmentation of the Irish whiskey category in the US," he added.
