The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 6.4% in May, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The number of people listed as unemployed fell by 1,200 on a seasonally adjusted basis, compared to April, and was 42,800 lower year-on-year to 140,700.

In May 2016 the seasonally adjusted figure was 183,500 and the unemployment rate was 8.4%.

Unemployment has consistently fallen since hitting a peak of 15.1% in early 2012 when the country was midway through a three-year international bailout.

Employment grew at its fastest annual pace since the financial crisis in the first quarter of 2017.

The country's jobless rate was revised up to 6.4% in April from an initial estimate of 6.2%.

The Finance Department last month estimated that the jobless rate would dip below 6% by the end of this year.

Commenting on today's figures, Mariano Mamertino, EMEA economist at global job site Indeed said that the level of youth unemployment has improved significantly on last year, with 11.7% of 15-24 year olds unemployed in May 2017 compared to 18% a year ago.

The economist said it is a testimony to the extent of the economic recovery story, that from a peak of 15.1% in the depths of the financial crisis, commentators are now increasingly concerned about tightness in the labour market.

He said that data compiled by Indeed shows that employers are increasingly facing challenges filling job vacancies, with the hospitality and property sectors amongst those where talent is in short supply.

According to Indeed's list of top 10 open roles in May, the jobs with the highest number of open opportunities available include chefs, quantity surveyors and accountants.
