Mayo would have been one of the many parts of the country that benefited from the influx of multinational manufacturers over the past three decades, but unlike other locations it managed to hold on to a lot of that, with many of the people who started out in those companies eventually going on to start businesses of their own.
The modern result is a cluster of manufacturers around the county, with some of the world's biggest pharmaceuticals operating alongside firms that make everything from food supplements to agricultural machinery to retail software.
Adam Maguire visited Mayo to speak with some of these firms in the context of what Brexit might bring.
